The Fourth Estate

The Fourth Estate is a term referring to the press. In this sense the term goes back at least to Thomas Carlyle, who attributed it, to a coining by Edmund Burke during a parliamentary debate in 1787 on the opening up of press reporting of the House of Commons. Burke said there were Three Estates in Parliament; but, in the Reporters' Gallery yonder, there sat a Fourth Estate more important than they all.
